Policy Configuration Series: What is criminal monitoring and how do I configure it?

Note: If you have never created a policy before, first read this article. If you do not know what a policy is, read this article.

Criminal Monitoring

Criminal Monitoring is a background check related service that you can set up as part of the policy configuration. When you turn this on and send a background check to a user, Evident will verify the criminal history of the applicant and also leverage the data points for our Criminal Monitoring Service. Our Criminal Monitoring service updates daily and will provide an alert to you when an individual who is arrested and booked on a charge has data points that align with your users' data points.

Heads up! Before turning this on, scroll to the bottom of this article and read the important note about how criminal monitoring is charged.

You can find criminal monitoring in the first page of the policy configuration process. This is an option that defaults being toggled to "No," which means that criminal monitoring is not on for the policy. If criminal monitoring is not on, then when the background check is run, no monitoring activity will take place.

If you want to turn this on, click the button to indicate "Yes" that you would like to turn on Criminal Monitoring. With this option turned on, Criminal Monitoring will be initiated when this policy is run on a specific user.

What events trigger alerts? Bookings from an arrest trigger an alert. This service does not alert when an individual receives a guilty adjudication nor are there any other alerting triggers outside of bookings from an arrest.

Once I turn on criminal monitoring, how do I turn it off? If you are turning this on for the first time, ensure that the Evident team is made aware of this change so that they can provide you with the tool that you will need to manage criminal monitoring for your applicants. You will be able to use the tool that Evident provides to see who has criminal monitoring turned on and to be able to turn criminal monitoring off.

If I receive an alert, what action do I take? Most businesses handle criminal alerting as an Individualized Assessment. However, this should not be construed as legal advice and you should always check with your legal counsel to ensure compliance with all federal and local laws regarding applicant management.

I turned on criminal monitoring but it was after I ran the background check on my user. Is there another way to turn this on? Reach out to the Evident team and provide them a list of email addresses for the users for whom you already ran a background check that you want criminal monitoring to be turned on for after-the-fact, and they can turn on criminal monitoring for you.

Important Note:

How is this service charged? This service is not included in the cost of the background check. If you have a contract that specifies that you qualify for volume discounts for certain products, and you have not negotiated a price for this service, you will be charged at our standard list price.
