Overview

Contract Extraction helps your team turn contract language into a clear, enforceable set of requirements in Evident—without doing all the manual reading and setup.

When you upload a contract, Evident will:

  • Extract the insurance requirements and key criteria it finds in the contract
  • Turn those extracted items into a proposed configuration you can use
  • Help you move from “contract language” to an actionable setup for ongoing compliance workflows

You can run Contract Extraction in two ways:

  • Copilot mode (guided / human-in-the-loop): Evident proposes and assists, and your team makes the final decisions.
  • Agent mode (automatic): Evident moves the process forward automatically when the next step is clear, and only asks you to step in when needed.

Step-by-step: What happens after you upload a contract

  1. Upload the contract

Upload a contract through the Contract Extraction workflow.

  2. We sanitize and process the document

Evident securely prepares the document for extraction and processes it in the background.

  3. Evident extracts requirements and details

Evident identifies the insurance requirements and criteria described in the contract and prepares a proposed setup.

  4. You review or approve the result (depending on your mode)

From here, the experience depends on whether you choose Copilot mode or Agent mode.

Copilot mode (guided): stay in control, with AI assistance

Copilot mode is built for teams that want a clear review step before anything becomes “real” in the system.

In Copilot mode, you’ll receive a Contract Extraction Review Action in your Actions queue.

What you’ll do

  • Review the proposed requirements and criteria Evident extracted from the contract
  • Fill in missing details (for example, when a contract references a requirement but doesn’t specify a value)
  • Edit anything that needs adjusting
  • Accept or reject the action

What “accept” means

When you accept a Contract Extraction Review Action:

  • Evident creates a risk profile based on the proposed configuration
  • Evident creates (or connects) the appropriate entity
  • The risk profile is assigned to that entity

What “reject” means

If you reject the action:

  • No risk profile is created
  • No entity changes occur
  • Nothing is enforced—rejecting is a true “no-op”

Why customers choose Copilot mode

  • You want a clear proposal → commit boundary
  • You need an explicit confirmation step for governance and internal control
  • You want to reduce manual effort while still keeping decision-making with your team

Agent mode (automatic): streamline the straightforward, escalate the exceptions

Agent mode is designed for “keep things moving” workflows.

When Agent mode is enabled, Evident attempts to complete the workflow automatically—end to end—without requiring review for every single contract.

What happens in Agent mode

  • Evident processes the contract and attempts to proceed automatically
  • Actions are created only when your input is required

When you’ll be asked to step in

Agent mode is intentionally conservative. Evident will pause and create an Action when it can’t proceed safely, such as:

  • Missing or unclear requirements (for example, the contract implies something is required but doesn’t specify the details)
  • Missing defaults needed to complete setup
  • Insufficient entity information to confidently connect the contract to the right entity
  • Ambiguous matching (for example, multiple possible entities could match the contract)
  • A decision boundary (for example, the entity already has an assigned setup and a decision is needed)

Important note on automation

Agent mode is meant to reduce busywork, not remove accountability. Like any automation, it can make mistakes—so when an Action is raised, it’s your chance to confirm details before anything important changes.

Why customers choose Agent mode

  • You want the majority of contracts to move forward automatically
  • You want to minimize repetitive review for straightforward contracts
  • You want the system to only interrupt you for real exceptions

Choosing between Copilot mode and Agent mode

Use Copilot mode when:

  • You’re rolling out Contract Extraction for the first time
  • You want to review every proposed setup before it’s applied
  • You have higher-risk or higher-variability contracts

Use Agent mode when:

  • Your contracts are fairly consistent and repeatable
  • Your team is comfortable reviewing exceptions instead of every contract
  • You’re trying to reduce turnaround time and keep work moving

Why this matters

  • Less manual work: Reduce the review effort needed for straightforward contracts
  • More control: Choose the right level of automation for each workflow
  • Faster progress: Keep contracts moving without unnecessary delays

FAQ

Does Evident make compliance decisions for me?

No. Evident helps extract and propose configurations based on contract language, but the workflow is designed to avoid implying that the system makes compliance determinations.

What happens to conversations or context from the review?

In Copilot mode, if you accept the action, the conversation context associated with that action can carry forward with the created entity—so you can refer back to what was discussed. If you reject the action, that context is not carried forward.
